Newly finished wastewater treatment plant for new housing development

Alpheus was appointed by a multi-utility provider to deliver a new private wastewater treatment plant able to treat the sewage generated by a new housing development of 1,500 plots.

The development is part of one of the largest housing developments in the South of England with plans to house a population of 40,000 over by 2030.

Project overview

A private wastewater treatment plant was required to allow the development of 1500 new homes in the South of England. The requirement was to install the plant in two stages alongside the two phases of the housing development of 750 plots per phase.

Alpheus Provided:

  • Support in acquiring planning permission and liaison with the Environment Agency (EA) and other stakeholders.
  • Design, construction and commissioning services including all civil, mechanical, electrical, and process works.

Alpheus was the Principal Contractor under CDM Regs and addressed the issues of working within a site with a tight footprint constrained on one boundary by a cliff and another by a lake.

Alpheus showcased its Turnkey design and build capability for Greenfield installations through this sewage treatment scheme. Adopting a modular treatment approach and applying careful plant design considerations to meet the challenging requirements, Alpheus were able to implement the 2-phase installations with a successful outcome.

Design and Construction Services Provided

Alpheus selected technology partner WPL Ltd (now WCSEE) to provide a submerged aerated filter (SAF) treatment process for the scheme using an innovative and flexible modular-based system which allows the plant to be expanded as the development grows.

The site selected for the location of the treatment plant was considered of sensitive nature by the EA due to the presence of an underlying aquifer, therefore all the main structures were built above ground within a fully bunded structure and any items installed below ground provided with double skin containment and a breach detection system.

Phase 1 installation of the development included all the necessary site infrastructures and one treatment stream of inlet screening, primary settlement, biological treatment, and secondary settlement.

After commissioning and 6 months of operation of the Phase 1 plant, Phase 2 involved the second treatment stream of inlet screening, primary settlement, biological treatment, and secondary treatment, ready to treat the full flow from the housing development.

The combined Phase 1 and 2 treatment systems supplied and constructed incorporated:

  • an inlet pump station
  • two inlet screens
  • a balance tank
  • two primary lamella clarifiers
  • a total of 16 modular Submerged Aerated Filters (SAF) units
  • two secondary lamella clarifiers
  • a treated effluent pumping station
  • two sludge storage tanks
  • a web-based telemetry system allowing off-site monitoring of all key parameters.

As well as considering space constraints and the need for groundwater protection, a cedar-wood cladded enclosure was incorporated in the plant design for the inlet screens to minimise the visual impact of the treatment works.

The Outcome

Both phases of the project were completed ahead of time and on budget, skilfully managed to meet the design and implementation challenges of working within a constrained footprint and phased installation
