Anglian Water welcomes over two million visitors each year across seven parks spanning more than 4,400 hectares.

These sites provide vital spaces for wildlife and nature, combining parkland, woodland, nature reserves and large water reservoirs.

Two of these parks required upgrades to their sewage treatment facilities, which had reached the end of their operational life.

Alpheus worked closely with the client to identify, design and deliver the most appropriate, sustainable and cost‑effective replacement solutions.

Overview

The previous cycle centre at Grafham Water hosted a small team, so we identified a solution that would serve the next tenant and allow room for future growth. A holding tank offered the simplest and most flexible option, enabling waste to be removed periodically while meeting current needs. If demand increases over time, the site can easily transition to a full treatment plant in the future.

At the Lyndon Visitor Centre at Rutland Water, which sees around 300 visitors a day, the existing septic tank has reached the end of its life, so a modern packaged treatment plant has been identified as the best long‑term solution. This upgrade will provide reliable performance and allow treated effluent to be safely discharged.

Project Delivery

Both projects were delivered smoothly and efficiently, with Alpheus completing all works within a two‑week period. Given that both parks are public parks, a core priority was ensuring visitor safety and minimising disruption throughout the installation works. Clear boundaries, protective barriers and signage were established from the outset, enabling the public to continue enjoying the parks while maintaining full compliance with safety requirements.

At Rutland Water, the new packaged treatment plant has been installed, connected and commissioned in readiness for use when the Visitor Centre reopens in Spring. Once live, the plant will ensure safe, reliable treatment and long-term environmental protection.

At Grafham Water, the 40,000-litre holding tank is ready for use once a new tenant takes over the former cycle centre unit. Although not yet live, all infrastructure and safety features are in place, providing a reliable interim solution that also allows for an easy upgrade to a full treatment plant if future demand increases.
